Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • AbbVie beats Q3 earnings and revenue estimates, reporting adjusted EPS of $3.82 and sales of $17.4 billion.
  • Immunology and neuroscience growth, led by Skyrizi and newer drugs, offsets Humira and Imbruvica declines.
  • AbbVie raises 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $13.95-$13.99 and increases its quarterly dividend by 5.2%.

AbbVie Inc. (ABBV - Free Report) reported adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $3.82 for the third quarter of 2026, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.74. The reported metric even surpassed management’s guidance of $3.73-$3.77.

Earnings surged 105.4% year over year, with the prior-year period burdened by a substantially larger acquired research and development (R&D) charge.

Revenues of $17.4 billion topped the consensus mark of $17.37 billion, rising 10.3% year over year on a reported basis and 10.5% at constant exchange rates (CER). Like EPS, the top-line metric also exceeded the guidance of $17.2 billion, driven by robust sales growth of key immunology and neuroscience drugs.

All sales growth rates mentioned below are on a year-on-year basis and at CER.

ABBV's Immunology Sales Lead Growth

Immunology revenues rose 16.6% to $9.17 billion.

Skyrizi sales were up 22.9% to $5.78 billion, exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $5.72 billion. The drug remained a major contributor to the portfolio's expansion.

Rinvoq sales increased 24.3% operationally to $2.71 billion but missed the consensus estimate of $2.73 billion. Its growth helped support immunology performance despite continued erosion in sales of older products.

Humira revenues fell 30.6% to $683 million, below the consensus estimate of $695 million. This substantial decline in Humira sales was due to the drug’s loss of exclusivity in the United States since January 2023. The drug lost its exclusivity in ex-U.S. territories in 2018.

AbbVie's Neuroscience Franchise Outperforms

Neuroscience revenues grew 19.5% to $3.39 billion, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.29 billion. Vraylar contributed $1.07 billion, up 14.3%, although sales fell short of the $1.08 billion consensus estimate.

Botox Therapeutic revenues advanced 9.8% to $1.08 billion. Migraine treatments were another source of growth: Ubrelvy generated $449 million, rising 26.9%, while Qulipta brought in $398 million, up 38.5%.

Vyalev recorded sales of $286 million, slightly ahead of the $283 million consensus estimate. The company also secured FDA approval for Juvmo, a once-daily Parkinson's disease treatment, adding to its neuroscience portfolio.

ABBV's Oncology Sales Edge Past Estimates

Oncology revenues reached $1.70 billion, up 0.9% and marginally ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.68 billion. Roche (RHHBY - Free Report) -partnered Venclexta brought in $803 million, rising 10.7% and topping the $793 million consensus estimate.

Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ - Free Report) -partnered Imbruvica remained under pressure, with revenues falling 26.1% to $522 million, below the $530 million consensus estimate. The drug’s sales were impacted, likely due to rising competition from novel oral treatments as well as the IRA-driven pricing changes that came into effect at the start of 2026.

Elahere revenues rose 31.2% operationally to $224 million, while Epkinly generated $108 million, up 60.8%.

AbbVie's Aesthetics Portfolio Misses Estimates

Aesthetics revenues totaled $1.18 billion, down 1.8% and below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.20 billion. Botox Cosmetic sales increased 4.1% to $669 million, but Juvederm revenues declined 11.8% to $222 million.

Among other marketed products, Linzess revenues grew 4.2% to $339 million. Mavyret sales fell 13.9% to $265 million, while Creon declined 2.2% to $361 million, reflecting mixed performance beyond the four principal franchises.

Cost Discussion

Adjusted SG&A expenses rose 8.1% year over year to $3.69 billion. Adjusted R&D expenses increased 7.5% to $2.43 billion.

The adjusted operating margin stood at 48.7%.

AbbVie Raises 2026 EPS Guidance

AbbVie lifted its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings guidance to $13.95-$13.99 per share from $13.76-$13.96. The revised outlook includes a $0.69-per-share adverse impact from acquired R&D and milestone expenses incurred through the third quarter.

The forecast excludes similar expenses that may arise after September, as their timing and size cannot be reliably forecast. Management cited portfolio momentum and a strong outlook alongside the decision to raise guidance.

The board also increased the quarterly dividend by 5.2% to $1.82 per share from $1.73. The new rate begins with the dividend payable Feb. 16, 2027.

Our Take on ABBV’s Results

AbbVie's third-quarter results beat earnings and revenue expectations, prompting management to raise its full-year earnings guidance. Shares of the company were trading higher during Friday's regular trading session, likely driven by the encouraging guidance revision and continued strength in its immunology and neuroscience franchises.

Year to date, the stock has gained over 27% compared with the industry’s nearly 23% growth.

However, the quarterly performance was not without weaknesses. Key drugs like Rinvoq and Vraylar missed their respective sales estimates despite recording double-digit year-over-year growth. The aesthetics franchise also fell short of expectations, weighed down by declining Juvederm sales. Nevertheless, robust demand for Skyrizi and continued growth across several newer products helped offset these shortcomings.

AbbVie continues to strengthen its long-term growth platform through acquisitions and internal innovation. The recent acquisition of Apogee Therapeutics, coupled with recent regulatory approvals for Decnupaz and Juvmo, could support future growth as legacy products like Humira and Imbruvica continue to face sales pressure.
